The story opens in a sleepy Malgudi village with Raju Velan, a regular villager who was just let out of jail, sleeping in the ruins next to the river. Velan, who adores Raju, confides in him about her issues, including the fact that her step-sister won’t wed the chosen man. Raju isn’t overly concerned.
But because he is lonely, he is glad that someone is speaking with him. He recalls that he was just released from prison and that he had once worked as a well-known tour guide. In Malgudi, Raju resided with his mother and father. After growing up constructing railroad stations, he took over his father’s sizable shop. In addition to being a very well-liked teacher, he had the nickname “Railway Raju and enjoyed interacting with others.
